They rely on powerful 3-stage planetary gear sets with ratios running from 159:1 all the way up to 265:1 to produce the serious oomph you're after. That means line-pull ratings as low as 3,000 lbs. and up to 12,000 lbs., depending on winch model. For your convenience, these winches offer features such as free-spooling, hand-held remote switches, and power-in/power-out. The largest units also have automatic load-holding brakes.
